Description of Practicum Hours
The 50-hour practicum experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre will offer you structured opportunities to develop knowledge and skills related to the nurse educator role in a specialized healthcare setting. The practicum will focus on staff development, clinical education, evidence-based practice, competency assessment, and evaluation of educational outcomes of nursing professionals.
The first 10 hours of practicum activities will involve orientation to the clinical learning environment and observation of nursing education practices. Activities will include an overview of the nurse educator role, an introduction to the staff education policy and resources, an observation of educational needs assessment, and a review of how professional development programs support safe, high-quality oncology nursing care.
The next 15 hours will be spent planning and developing educational activities for the nursing personnel. The practicum experience involves determining staff learning needs, developing educational materials, creating measurable learning objectives, and choosing suitable teaching methods. Other activities may include reviewing competency requirements, helping with orientation resources for newly hired nurses, and exploring the use of simulation, online learning, and other teaching technologies.
The next 15 hours will be used for the delivery and implementation of nursing education. Activities will involve observing staff training, participating in clinical teaching opportunities, assisting with skills demonstration, supporting competency validation and providing educational guidance under the supervision of an experienced nurse educator. Working with nursing leaders and members of the interdisciplinary health care team will also give insight into the importance of teamwork in professional nursing development.
The final 10 hours will focus on program evaluation, professional reflection and continuous improvement. Activities include review of feedback from the nursing staff, evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching strategies, examination of educational objectives achieved and identification of recommendations for future educational programs.
