Description of Practicum Hours
This 50-hour Mount Sinai Hospital nursing education practicum will allow me to develop my understanding of the nurse educator role in a large, diverse health care system. This practicum will focus on the education of staff concerning professional development and clinical competencies, as well as the integration of evidence-based practice, patient safety, and quality improvement. This practicum will provide the opportunity to both observe and participate in various educational activities to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to address the continuing professional development of nursing staff.
The first ten hours of the practicum will focus on the orientation to this new health care setting and the observation of various nursing education practices. This will include reviewing the various roles and responsibilities of nurse educators, familiarization with the various educational policies and resources, observation of staff development activities, and assessment of the various educational needs of nursing staff. This will include how the nurse educators and clinical leaders develop educational and training programs to meet the organizational needs of the health care system and enhance the quality of patient care outcomes.
The next fifteen hours will focus on assessment and articulation of educational programs. This will include the identification of needs for nursing practice and clinical competencies, a review of the current literature and practice, development of learning goals, and selection of appropriate teaching strategies. This will also include the development of educational resources and training competencies, orientation guides, and instructional activities to meet the identified professional development needs of nursing staff.
The remaining 15 hours will consist of attending nursing education and staff development activities. This will give the opportunity to observe some teaching and learning sessions, assist in the teaching of clinical skills, and engage in simulation learning activities, as well as in the support of competency validation and instructional provision to nursing staff. This will all be done under the guidance of an associate nurse educator. Lastly, although this will be done to a limited degree, working with nurse administrators and other professionals in healthcare will provide an opportunity to appreciate the application of educational principles to working and teaching in diverse educational settings.
The last 10 hours of the practicum will be focused on the evaluation of the education offered, the quality of education, and active professional reflection. This will include analyzing participants’ comments and rating scales, assessing whether the training objectives have been met, contesting the pertinence of the educational activities, and proposing changes to enhance/increase the effectiveness of the staff development actions. This will culminate in a written reflection regarding the value and impact of the practicum on the development of the nursing profession and the role of nursing in the support of an ongoing commitment to the development and improvement of quality healthcare.
