Description of Practicum Hours
The 50-hour experiential learning opportunity at Memorial Sloan Kettering will help me begin developing the role of a nurse educator in a specialized healthcare setting. Staff development, clinical education, evidence-based practice, and competency and outcome evaluation for nursing education are the key areas of focus for this practicum.
The first 10 hours of the practicum will be spent on the orientation of the clinical learning setting and the observation of nursing education. This involves gaining insight into the role of the nurse educator, familiarity with the various nursing staff educational policies and resources, assessing the educational needs of nurses, and reviewing how professional development programs facilitate the provision of safe, effective, and high-quality care in oncology nursing.
The next 15 hours will be spent on the planning and program development of nursing education. Key activities for this part of the experience will be assessing the educational needs of nursing staff, developing educational/learning materials, writing educational/learning objectives, and formulating appropriate teaching methods. This part of the practicum may also involve reviewing competency requirements, developing orientation resources for newly hired nurses, and exploring the use of simulation and other learning technologies.
The next 15 hours will focus on the actual teaching of nursing staff. Activities for this part of the practicum will be the observation of teaching sessions, participation in the clinical teaching of nursing staff, the demonstration of nursing skills and teaching, and the provision of educational advice under the supervision of a nurse educator. This part of the practicum will also involve an opportunity to provide educational resources and engage in collaborative team nursing.
The last 10 hours will focus on evaluation, self-assessment, and improvement of the program. Specific tasks will entail considering nursing staff feedback, assessing the different methods used for teaching, determining whether the target goals of the education were met, and discussing the ways in which future education programs may be improved. The practicum will help to establish goals and provide an understanding of the nurse educator role in the ongoing learning process of the organization and in impacting the outcomes of the patients.
This 50-hour practicum at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will help the author to further develop the skills of planning educational programs, staff development, teaching, and evaluation, as well as skills in communication, leadership, the evaluation of competencies, and practice based on evidence. Additionally, the author will acquire skills in working collaboratively with other professionals. This will be a significant step in the author’s professional development in preparation for the role of advanced nursing educator in the complex world of health care organizations.
