Description of Practicum Hours
The 50-hour Nursing Education Practicum at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will allow me to engage in and observe practicing nurse educator instructional activities and design nurse educators to be capable of supporting the development of evidence-based practice for the cancer population and facilitating the nurse’s professional growth throughout the nurse’s career. The practicum will cover the educator’s role in identifying learning needs, developing and planning instructional practice, and evaluating the practice and outcomes of learning for the nursing staff.
The first 10 hours will include an orientation to the practicum, an observation of the nurse educator’s practice and role, a review of the organization’s policies and their educational resources, and the assessment of learning needs of the nursing staff. This will include understanding each segment and how nursing education promotes development in practice to enhance patient safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based oncology.
The next 15 hours will be dedicated to the preparation and planning of nursing education and the development of a curriculum. This will include the development of staff education materials, the identification of teaching and learning strategies, the development of learning objectives, and the consideration of learning challenges and the use of differentiated instruction among the nursing staff. This will include the observation of staff orientation and validation of competencies, continuing education, and learning activities based on simulations.
The last 15 hours of the practicum will include the observation and/or participation in nursing education activities that include teaching, skill demonstrations, and training with an emphasis on coaching and the evaluation of competencies. Throughout the practicum, the focus will be on developing nursing education through technology and partnering with nursing leadership and other professionals.
The last part focuses on examining the results of the education sessions and the reflection on the nurse educator role. This includes reviewing participant comments, assessing whether the session learning objectives were met, recognizing areas for enhancing the education sessions, and exploring methods to encourage the nursing staff to develop the habit of continuous learning and professional growth.
The completion of the 50 hours of the nursing education practicum at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will develop my skills in educational assessment, curriculum design, teaching, and evaluative skills necessary for evidence-based practice and collaborative interprofessional practice. The nursing education practicum will create an invaluable opportunity to gain an understanding of the tasks and responsibilities related to nursing staff development and the education of professionals in an oncology setting. This will help cultivate the advanced nursing education competencies in an oncology setting.
