Throughout the 50 hours of practicum at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, I took part in various nursing informatics activities that broadened my understanding of the role of technology in patient care, the improvement of quality in healthcare, and increased efficiency of clinical processes. This practicum helped me learn about the implementation of informatics in practice and increased my knowledge on data-based decision-making.

The largest part of the practicum was devoted to observation of the use of the electronic health record (EHR) system by healthcare providers for coordination of patient care. I learned about clinical documentation procedures, the process of data input, and maintenance of data accuracy and integrity.

Moreover, I also worked with nursing informatics experts to explore quality improvement programs involving patient safety indicators, medication administration records, and clinical decision support systems. As a result of my participation in interdisciplinary teams’ meetings, I received valuable insights on how organizations detect workflow problems and use technology solutions to overcome them and increase the effectiveness of their operations.

Furthermore, one more significant part of my internship included analysis of healthcare data reports, patient outcome measures, and performance dashboards. I learned about the process of collecting, interpreting, and converting clinical data into evidence-based reports used for quality improvement programs and decision making.

Also, I took part in the discussions about cybersecurity, confidentiality issues, and HIPAA compliance. The learning experience has shown how important it is to maintain patient confidentiality while providing timely access to clinical information for those healthcare providers who have the authorization to see it.

Moreover, during the entire time I spent on my practicum, I got acquainted with new technologies that are being used in the modern healthcare industry, namely telehealth services, initiatives aimed at achieving interoperability, and mHealth applications. Seeing all these technological developments in action has expanded my knowledge of the newest trends in nursing informatics.

In general, finishing my 50 hours of practicum activities, I can say that my competencies in health information technology, clinical information management, quality improvement, and interprofessional collaboration have been significantly improved.
