Description of Practicum Hours
This nursing education practicum at Montefiore Medical Center offers 50 hours of learning that will help me to understand both the duties and the impact that nurse educators have on developing the nursing staff and the implications that they have on clinical and professional nursing and even on caring for our patients. Specific to this practicum, I will have the opportunity to learn about educational assessment, instructional design, evidence-based teaching, staff/ faculty professional development, and the assessment of educational outcomes in a complex health care delivery system.
The first ten hours of this practicum will focus on the orientation of the health care organization and an observation placement in the nursing education department. During these hours, I will familiarize myself with the various roles of nurse educators, review nursing staff educational policies and procedures, and observe the various educational programs and the professional and educational developmental needs of the nursing staff. This will allow me to understand the value and the impact that the nursing education unit has on fulfilling the objectives of the organization and nursing to ensure both patient safety and to enhance the quality of the nursing service.
The next fifteen hours will focus on the design and development of educational programs for nursing staff. Here, I will assist with identifying needs, developing educational goals, and selecting evidence-based resources. Other possible experiences include assisting in the development of orientation, staff development, and/ or competency assessment checklists and instructional materials to address identified needs.
The next 15 hours will require me to help implement nursing education components. I will observe and assist staff training, clinical teaching, and skills demonstrations and validations, as well as continuing education activities. The practicum will help me understand the role of nursing education and how communication and collaboration affect staff clinical education and practice as I work alongside nursing and clinical educators and other healthcare professionals.
I will spend the last 10 hours of the practicum evaluating educational programs with a focus on my professional development. This will require evaluating staff input, the extent of goal/objective attainment, and recognizing key program strengths and recommendations. I will also provide my assessment of the overall program and suggest next steps. The reflection will focus on the personal/professional development growth experienced and the outcome of the practicum.
Completing the 50-hour practicum at Montefiore Medical Center will provide an overview of the role of a nurse educator, with a focus on developing the outlined nursing, communication, leadership, and collaboration skills, as well as the educational program assessment and evaluation skills, from the evidence-based perspective of nursing education.
