Reflection on Nursing Core Values and Ethical Standards

The experience is evaluated in terms of how the core values of nursing can be transferred into practice and into professional and personal practice, as well as leadership, mentorship, and ethical responsibilities. It examines the ways professional identity is shaped with the help of such values as compassion, integrity, equity, and advocacy. The role of diversity, equity and inclusion in patient care and collaboration is also briefly discussed. Finally, it criticizes the peer review methods and mentorship experiences as tools for cultivating accountability, improvement, and quality practice of nursing.

Critique of Personal and Professional Practices

Personal View of the Professional Identity of a Nurse

Caring, integrity, advocacy and accountability are the core values of nursing, and my habits and practice as a nurse are consistent with them. I am in a constant effort to provide patient-centered care that is respectful, empathetic, and culturally sensitive. I view patients holistically, that is, I understand their physical, emotional, and social needs, and this goes in line with human dignity and caring values. In my practice, I maintain accountability by adhering to evidence-based practice and ethical standards and realize that there is still more to be done to strengthen my advocacy capabilities so that vulnerable patients do not remain voiceless. The professional identity of the nurse can be described to me as a combination of clinical competence and human relationships. The nurse goes beyond being a caregiver and is an educator, advocate, leader, and collaborator. The identity is founded on lifelong learning, ethical practice, and aiming at improving individual results and the healthcare system in general.

Ways to Demonstrate the Core Values in Personal and Professional Practices

I observe integrity by being truthful and open in recording the clinical process and in communicating with the patients. Altruism is manifested in that the needs of patients are put above convenience, which renders them comfortable and safe. I am an inclusive person who is respectful to other cultures, spirituality, and social backgrounds without being discriminating. Compassion guides me to be empathetic in the delivery of care, listening, and responsive to emotional and physical needs. Through courage, I would speak up against unsafe practices and instill improvement in quality. Humility will make sure I am open to feedback, see my weakness and learn through others. Advocacy can be observed when I make sure that the rights of patients are not violated and their voices are heard during care decisions. I demonstrate caring by building trusting relationships and being supportive. Autonomy is exemplified by reasonable and evidence-based judgments in the scope of my practice. I respect each patient with dignity and respect by treating him/her with respect. Finally, I observe social justice by promoting equitable access to quality and safe care.

Professional Practices Ensure Dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion form the necessary competencies for nurses. This reflective practice highlights the importance of culturally competent communication, advocacy, and equality in improving the care of patients.

My work ethics are in line with diversity, equity, and inclusion since I embrace a culture of respect and equality in every interaction with patients and colleagues. I make sure that my care for the patients is not discriminatory by ensuring that interventions are modified according to their linguistic, cultural, and spiritual requirements to promote equal treatment and outcomes. I advocate the use of interpreters and culturally sensitive materials in the event of communication gaps. In the presence of staff, I embrace teamwork by giving respect to various ideas and ensuring that everyone has a secure setting where he or she feels heard and respected. I am also wary of implicit biases and constantly inform myself of health disparities to improve equitable care provision. I embrace inclusivity, which helps to make decisions together and enables patients to be active participants in their care. These are activities that show dedication to both the reduction of health inequities and the strengthening of teamwork, to ensure that the dignity, sense of belonging, and justice of both patients and employees are preserved in the medical environment.

Professional Organizations that Reflect Personal Nursing Values and Identity

I am defined by professional organizations such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) (ANA, 2025; Sigma, n.d.). I share the ANA vision of advancing the nursing profession to enhance health for all with my advocacy, accountability and social justice obligations. Its commitment to ethical practice and patient-centered care aligns with my principles of integrity, compassion, and humanity. Similarly, Sigma promotes nursing excellence, global leadership, and evidence-based practice, which are equivalent to my lifelong learning, professional growth, and innovative care. Inclusivity, collaboration, and equity are also appreciated in both organizations, and this makes me appreciate the importance of respecting diversity and offering equitable access to health care.

Identified Professional Organizations Help to Improve Personal Practice

My own practice is facilitated by the American Nurses Association and Sigma, which provide me with resources, education, and professional development that widen my learning as a nurse. ANA grants me access to evidence-based practice guidelines, policy information, and continuing education that will help me improve my clinical decision-making and keep my practice at the current standards. Its advocacy work also allows me to work more effectively towards the understanding and resolution of systemic issues, and thus entrenches my role as a patient and community advocate. Sigma promotes the sharing of research and cultivation of leadership, and I am motivated to inject creativity and research into practice. The networking opportunities offered by both organizations provide me with a chance to collaborate with various forms of nursing professionals and broaden my perspective, and make me open-minded to different approaches to quality improvement. I keep expanding my values of integrity, compassion, inclusiveness, and social justice by ensuring that my practice is ethical, evidence-based, and patient-centered through my alignment with their missions.

Personal Actions Model Ethical Behaviors in Nursing Practice and Leadership

Ethical Behaviors are Inherent in the Nursing Profession

The following behaviors are ethical and inherent in nursing practice: honesty, accountability, respect towards human dignity, patient advocacy, commitment to nonmaleficence and beneficence. These behaviors are practiced in my practice by being open in communication with patients and colleagues, by providing complete information, and by being involved in decision-making. I engage in accountability in proper documentation, adherence to evidence-based practices and accountability in whatever I do. My care revolves around respect for dignity since I am compassionate to all patients regardless of their condition or background. I become an advocate for vulnerable patients and advocate when care plans might jeopardize safety or equity. As a leader, I encourage equality and inclusivity, creating a setting in which every member of the team feels special and encouraged. Through these principles of ethics in my daily practice, I would be offering an example of professionalism and integrity that would be a good example of the dedication of nursing to ethical, patient-based, socially just care. Potential Solutions for Unethical Behaviors

In case unethical conduct is seen during the nursing practice, a constructive intervention should be taken immediately to protect patient safety and maintain professional integrity. Among the options is the implementation of the existing chain of command, where a direct approach to the concerned colleague, followed by respectful dialogue to share concerns, is applied (Tabassi et al., 2024). Promotion to a charge nurse or manager, or to an ethics committee, ensures that there is proper evaluation. The documentation of those incidences in objective and factual words aids in accountability and transparency. Requesting an ethics consultation is also a way to guide complex dilemmas in which value clashes arise (Tabassi et al., 2024). Prevention is done through education and mentoring, which reinforces professional standards and prevents duplication. In the worst cases, whistleblower protection can be requested when damage or malpractice has taken place.

Reflection on Mentoring Others

Incident of Formally or Informally Mentoring Someone

I recall a particular occasion when I was informally coaching a new employee nurse at her orientation stage in the intensive care unit (ICU). She had problems with time and documentation management, and this factor affected her self-esteem and level of responsibility. I used the opportunity to coach her by providing helpful advice on making patient care a top priority, including the organization of tasks based on their urgency or interventions bundling. I also emphasized the importance of accurate, timely charting as a measure of patient safety and professionalism. Through a diligent demonstration of these practices and positive feedback, I was able to assist her in understanding the value of accountability in a relationship of trust, both with the patients and other colleagues. I could see how her confidence grew with time, and she did more and more work independently. This experience has again proven my belief in mentorship as a powerful instrument to create professional growth, promote responsibility, and improve the quality of nursing care within a group.

Personal and Organizational Benefits

Mentoring the novice nurse brought me useful personal and professional experience. It enhanced my teaching and leadership skills because I could articulate direction in a clear, patient and constructive way. It was also an experience that cemented my personal sense of accountability, since the best practice of role modeling required consistency and being reflective about my own care delivery. Personally, I was pleased to see the nurse become more confident and competent, and it gave me the feeling of pride and greater appreciation of teamwork. To the care team overall, the benefits were also great. Workflow improved, and patient care was safer and more standard as the new nurse became efficient and more precise in her practice. The mentoring process also provided a favourable team culture where collaboration and knowledge-sharing were the order of the day. This boosted morale, reduced stress amongst colleagues, and promoted a quality and patient-focused dedication.

Strategies and Methods for Effective Peer Review

Peer review in nursing education can be effectively conducted in the form of professional identity in nursing and peer assessment after clinical exposure (PACE). Professional identity in nursing is aimed at evaluating values, ethics and behavior of nurses on the basis of clinical practice. Common standards, such as professionalism, critical thinking, and adherence to nursing expectations, provide the feedback (Landis, 2023). This methodical perspective promotes thought and objectivity but may lack the nuances of individual professional growth, which can often be affected by own experience and relations.

In opposition to this is PACE, which involves a peer appraisal on the spot immediately following clinical exposure with a focus on performance skills, communication with the patient, and compliance with procedures (Sillitoe et al., 2021). It has the benefit of enabling real-time reflection and skill development, but may be uncomfortable or biased when nurses look at their peers. The two methods complement one another in that professional identity in nursing can be applied to encourage reflective and structured criticism, and PACE comments on the actual state of affairs, which is more practical and balanced, resulting in an enhanced peer review process.

Evaluation of Other Members of a Care Team

Within the framework of my clinical practice, I participated in a peer assessment process during which nurses were asked to evaluate the communication, collaboration, and degree of compliance with safety measures of each other. I evaluated a colleague after a shift where we were working together and had several critical patients. It was done by filling a standardized form and providing narrative commentary. I focused on her strengths in priority of care and staying calm during a crisis, but I also made it clear that she can improve in some areas, such as delegating more clearly during an emergency. The evaluation was found to be efficient since it was well structured, unemotional and full of constructive criticism which enhanced improvement rather than undermining. Peer feedback, which I got later, was as helpful as it gave me an insight into aspects that I had not considered. This procedure promoted accountability, respect towards one another, and free interaction, which promoted the importance of peer review in order to promote collaboration and improve patient care outcomes.

Conclusion

The given evaluation underlines the role of the core values in nursing in shaping personal and professional identity, ethical practice, accountability, and responsive care. Nurses strengthen their position as advocates and leaders through membership in professional organizations and advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Growth, collaboration and continuous improvement of clinical practice are also improved by mentorship and peer review. Together, these elements are what guarantee a culture of integrity, reflection, and collaboration that helps to achieve positive patient outcomes, as well as advance the nursing profession.
